RELIGIOUS   WRONG - Part FOUR :

What To Do about the
Religious and Political Right

    Pages :   0,   1,   2,   3,   [4]

If "Fundamentalism", "Reconstructionism" and / or "Dominionism" disturb you, don't panic.  And don't let your anger or fear move you to turn against every manifestation of religion, or of Christianity.  That would be a grave mistake, playing right into their hands.  The Religious Right has been successful in America because 1) unlike Democratic strategists, they know and take very seriously the fact that 75% of the voters of America view themselves as "Christians", and
2) they have been able to persuade enough of these Christian voters to view them as the authentic representatives of religion, morality and of Christianity.
3) every time their opponents rail against Christianity as such the claim of these imposters to be defenders everything Christian is reinforced.
In case you hadn't noticed, the response of our Liberal and/or Democratic leaders to the Religious Right, so far, has been a dismal failure.  Here's why: 1) They have tried to hide their heads in the sand, and pretended that "the Religious Right"  isn't really as strong as people believe.  They want to believe that secular and/or corporatist Republicans and independents are the ones really in charge and that such people won't let religious nuts get too much power in their party.
2) They have engaged in wishful thinking that American voters aren't really influenced much by their rather nominal religious affiliations.
3) They have argued that there's a wall of separation of church and state that not only makes it illegal for public officials to mix religion and politics - which is the case -, but that this wall should also prevent voters from mixing their religious views with their political decisions, - which is not the case -.
As for points 1) and 2), I hope it's not necessary to explain why Liberal and/or Democratic leaders should get their heads out of the sand and face the unpleasant fact that the radical Religious Right has demonstrated its power by filling many of the most powerful positions in the country with their people, such as George Bush, Tom Delay and the House leadership, Senators Lott, Frist, Santorum and Nickles, A. J. Ashcroft, Justices Rhenquist, Scalia and Thomas, to name just a few.  And although the religion of many American may not be strong enough to make them mystics, it's powerful enough to make them decide which party they identify with.
As for 3), while "the separation of church and state" applies to public officials, not to voters, or to candidates appealing to voters for their votes.  There is nothing in the Constitution or anywhere else requiring voters to abide by any kind of wall of separation between church and state.  That being the case, Democratic candidates for public office should stop wondering why they can't connect with the electorate, if they insist on viewing as "off-limits" many of the issues that are most important to their constituents.  See many more valuable insights on this crucial issue at our LiberalsLikeChrist.Org/ChurchState site.
As for the degree to which American voters are influenced by their religion, our LiberalsLikeChrist.Org/graphs shows why Liberal Democrats have been losing the "Christian vote" in recent years.  And LiberalsLikeChrist.Org/Democrats and many other pages of the "Liberals Like Christ" mega web site shows our side how to win over Christian voters to the Liberal Democratic party which has an infinitely better record of being "Christlike" than the Greedy Old Party (at least since the Great Depression).
        We believe that the best hope for defeating the "Reconstructionists" is to use every means possible to reach the 75% of U.S.  voters who identify themselves as "Christians" with the message that A ) "Jesus was a LIBERAL", (as we Liberals define the term, at LiberalsLikeChrist.Org/Liberals);
B ) that most of what today's so-called "Religious Right" represents is not Jesus Christ's teaching, but Nicolo Machiavelli's, and
C ) that Liberal Democrats are much more like Jesus Christ than are Conservative Republicans.
(all of which we show in great detail at LiberalsLikeChrist.Org/Democrats)

The following is an excerpt from a fund-raising email from chief procurement officer of the Republican Party regarding their Christian base:

Cost : $ 245,000,000.00 : Mobilization
"We plan to use three froms of communcations to mobilize and win these battles. Phones, mail and Christian radio. We believe that if you are on TV you are generally losing battles like this. Our mission is to get specifically selected groups of individuals to the polls. to speak out AGAINST something.         To that end, your money is best spent find them and communicating with tthem on using the modes that they are most likely to respond to. Simply put, we want to bring out the wackos to vote against something and make sure the rest of the public lets the whole thing slip past them. The wackos get their information from the Christian right, Christian radio, mail, the internet and telephone trees.
Mail We will communicate with our targeted voters 3 times with Christian alert mail pieces. Cost $ 150,000.00"
