On September 1, 1939, Hitler invaded Poland from three directions. Hitler's invincible troops attacked from the west, the north and the south. Poland never had a chance.
Toward the end of the very same month that Hitler's troops were mercilessly crushing Poland (one of the most Roman Catholic countries on earth), this is what the New York Times reported that the hierarchy was recommending that German Catholics do about it :
"By October 8, 1939, Polish Jews and non-Jews were stripped of all rights and, were subject to special legislation. Rationing, which allowed for only bare sustenance of food and medicine was quickly set up. Young Polish men were forcibly drafted into the German army. The Polish language was forbidden. Only the German language was allowed. All secondary schools and colleges were closed. The Polish press was liquidated. Libraries and bookshops were burned. Polish Art and culture were destroyed. Polish churches and religious buildings were burned. Most of the priests were arrested and sent to concentration camps. Street signs were either destroyed or changed to new German names. Polish cities and towns were renamed in German. It was Hitler's goal to obliterate all traces of Polish history and culture.
Hundreds of Polish community leaders, mayors, local officials, priests, teachers, lawyers, judges, senators, doctors were executed in public. Much of the rest of the so-called Intelligentsia, the Polish leading class, was sent to concentration camps where they later died.
The first mass execution of World War II took place in Wawer, a town near Warsaw, Poland on December 27, 1939 when 107 Polish non-Jewish men were taken from their homes in the middle of the night and shot. This was just the beginning of the street roundups and mass executions that continued throughout the war. The goal of these executions, deportations, and the ruthless domination of citizens was to terrorize all Poles into docile subservience."

One of the main supporters of the Fascist-Vatican pact was Msgr. Eugenio Pacelli ( the future Pope Pius XII ), then in Germany. His brother, a canon lawyer, became one of the chief secret negotiators . . . Later, the Papal Nuncio to Germany, Msgr. Eugenio Pacelli saw to it that his brother was made a Prince (in Italy)."  Pope Pius XII's ambassador, Archbishop Cesare Orsenigo, celebrating Hitler's birthdayOn April 20, 1939, Orsenigo celebrated Hitler's birthday. The celebrations, initiated by Pope Pius XII, when he preceded Orsenigo as Papal Nuncio to Germany) became a tradition. Each year, in the name of the Catholic bishops and the dioceses in Germany, April 20, Cardinal Bertram of Berlin sent "warmest congratulations to the Fuëhrer, with "fervent prayers which the Catholics of Germany are sending to heaven on their altars." The Roman Catholic historian, John Cornwell, shows in "Hitler's Pope" that Papal Nuncio Pacelli did very much the same thing in Germany in the early 30's to clear the way for the complete domination of German politics by the NAZI party. It seems that the celibate hierarchy of the Roman Catholic church believed that it knew with absolute certainty that married couples who practiced birth control or abortion, and young men or women who pleasured themselves would surely burn forever in hell for sins that are not clearly identified a single time in the Bible. But they could not figure out that it was sinful to work for a regime engaged in genocide right under their noses. Nor could they figure out that it was sinful to endorse that regime from their pulpits, their altars and their printing presses ! None of this should be construed to say that the Protestant Church of Germany was any better than the Catholic church. It's hero, Martin Luther, was a virulent anti-semite much quoted by Hitler. In fact, the NAZIs scheduled their "Crystal Night" purge in honor of Martin Luther's birthday! |

Some apologists for the Roman Catholic hierarchy imagine that there are two arguments that prove Pope Pius XII innocent of any guilt over the holocaust. One is that he was supposedly responsible for quietly rescuing some 860,000 Jews. If this is the case, what kind of consolation is that to the 6 million other Jews who slipped through his fingers into the concentration camps and crematoria? Just stop for a moment and ask yourself how many more Pius XII could have saved, if he had required all of the Catholic bishops and priests under his authority to "call a spade a spade" or mass murder the deadliest of sins? What would the 33% or so of Hitler's troops who were Catholic have done if their priests and bishops had challenged them to chose between their God and their Fuëhrer? What if, instead of telling them that it was their duty as Catholics to be loyal and obedient citizens and soldiers, the Pope had excommunicated the Catholic Heads of State of all of the NAZI countries and told their own faithful that it was the gravest of mortal sins to play any part in the systematic extermination of innocent human beings, including people whom the Roman Catholic liturgy throughout those years continued to call "the perfidious Jews"?
In his chapter on the beginning of the tribulations for the Jews of Rome, Cornwell explains that the Roman Catholic soldiers were allowed to drive the trucks carting off the Jews right past St. Peters, so that they could see the famous symbolic center of their church. He also shows that contrary to the figment that Pope Pius XII had to fear NAZI retribution against him and his church, the German occupiers themselves didn't want to move against the Italian Jews because these German occupiers feared that the reaction of the Italian Catholic population, which was very sympathetic to the Jews. Pope Pius refused to intervene on behalf of the Jews of Roman even though the leadership of the German occupation itself was urging him to protest publicly and to register his objections with Berlin. Cornwell also points out in this chapter, that an often reported story about Pius providing a ransom for the Jews of Rome is wrong on two counts. Although the pope deserves credit for offering the ransom, it needs to be noted that it was only offered as a "loan", not a grant. And the Jews provided the ransom themselves, so the Church didn't pay the ransom after all. Another misunderstanding that Cornwell clears up here is the role of the chief Rabbi of Rome at this time, Israel Zolli, who has been used since as a great apologist for Pope Pius XII. When Catholics quote Zolli and point out that he became a convert to Roman Catholicism, look to see if they also reveal that this chief rabbi was disowned for the Jews (i.e. practically "defrocked") for abandonning his community at their time of greatest need and accepting the hospitality of Pius XII for himself and his immediate family within the walls of the Vatican. The other argument is that even more Jews would have perished if the Pope and Bishops and priests of the Roman Catholic church had pointed an accusing finger at the Roman Catholic NAZI dictators Hitler, Petain, Franco, Pavelic, and Tiso (an ordained Catholic priest, no less). (Although an atheist himself, Mussolini would have noticed if the vast majority of his subjects were being told to resist him.) People might speculate forever about "what might have been". But here is what did happen in one of those NAZI countries. "Beyond Hitler's Grasp" The Heroic Rescue of Bulgaria's Jews, by Michael Bar-Zohar is the true account of what happened ( it might be better to say what didn't happen ) to the Jews of Bulgaria : In the face of constant German demands, Bulgaria's government refused to deport the nation's Jewish citizens. Instead, as the Bulgarian-born Israeli politician Michael Bar-Zohar writes in this fine contribution to Holocaust studies, "the Bulgarian Jews became the only Jewish community in the NAZI sphere of influence whose number increased during World War II." Bar-Zohar attributes the Bulgarian government's successful resistance to a general absence of anti- Semitism among the populace: most Bulgarian Jews were of the working class and had long since been culturally assimilated; even many of the ardent fascists in the government opposed their being murdered. To be sure, Bar-Zohar writes, the Jews of Bulgaria were persecuted -- yet thanks to the efforts of leaders like the parliamentarian Dimiter Peshev and the Orthodox Metropolitan Stefan, they were spared the terrible fate of so many other Jews in the region. Zohar, who was born in Sofia in 1938 and immigrated to Israel in 1948, spent four years researching this book. He interviewed survivors and gained access to the Central National Archives in Bulgaria, to various ministries' archives, the archives of the Saint Synod, the diplomatic and SS archives in Germany, and others." Sniffen Associated Press Writer (Friday, June 30, 2000; 12:37 p.m. EDT) Washington -- The FBI has begun teaching its new agents how a failure by police to protect citizen rights helped produce the Holocaust in which 6 million Jews, as well as other minorities and political dissidents were murdered by the NAZIs. The training segment for agents-to-be at the FBI Academy began last month and was announced Friday by FBI Director Louis J. Freeh; Sara J. Bloomfield, director of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League. "We do this early on in their training . . . to remind them of the horror and evil which can result from not just a government, but particularly law enforcement, abandoning its mission to protect people and becoming the engine of oppression," Freeh said. The trainees are given a guided tour of the Holocaust Museum here and instruction about Adolf Hitler's use of the police in Germany in the 1930s and 1940s to round up Jews, political opponents and other targeted groups . . . Bloomfield, the museum director, said, "Much of the Holocaust was perpetrated or supported by trained professionals who were 'doing their job.' The museum's program with the FBI challenges law enforcement agents to examine the moral dimensions of their professions." The topic of police complicity in the Holocaust has been a concern of Freeh's for some time. In 1994, over objections from the State Department and the U.S. ambassador to Poland, Freeh visited the NAZI death camp at Auschwitz during a European trip and gave a speech at Jagellonian University in nearby Krakow, Poland, on the police role in Hitler's oppression. Freeh researched and wrote the speech himself with help from Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel." |
"The National (Nazi) Government will regard it as its first and foremost duty to revive in the nation the spirt of unity and cooperation. It will preserve and defend those basic principles on which our nation has been built. It regards Christianity as the foundation of our national morality, and the family as the basis of national life."= Adolf Hitler's proclaimation of "My New Order" to the German nation at Berlin, Feb. 1, 1933. Although Lutherans and Roman Catholics may be trying to distance themselves from Adolf Hitler in our times and in other countries, (and even claim that he was an atheist, etc.) neither Hitler nor the Catholic Church nor the Lutheran Church pushed for a divorce when Hitler was riding high in Europe and needed a vast army of partners willing to do the actual dirty work of rounding up, incarcerating, torturing, and exterminating 10 million victims, and then disposing of their bodies. That multitude of "willing exectioners" wasn't recruited on Mars, but from a German population that was approximately 50% Protestant and 40% Catholic, and from other largely Christian countries. There's a book that reports on evidence that Hitler's army even included some Jews! But the vast majority of Hitler's enablers were either Lutheran or Catholic Christians, not Martians or "atheists"). Unapologetic Roman Catholics try to claim that their church and Hitler were at odds with one another. This is just one example of the facts of those times, the front page of The New York Times, on August 20th, 1934, the first year of Hitler's dictatorship, featured this item:
In 1939 by Roberto Farinacci, a member of Mussolinis Fascist Grand Council, while speaking on "The Church and the Jews" said "We fascist Catholics consider the Jewish problem from a strictly political point of view. . . . But it comforts our souls to know that if, as Catholics, we became anti-Semites, we owe it to the teachings that the Church has promulgated over the past twenty centuries."
The Christian churches aren't the only ones that started trying to put distance between themselves and the Nazi's after their defeat. Even Leni Riefenstahl, the famous producer of Hitler's incredibly successful propaganda films, like the 1934 "Triumph of the Will", spent most of her very long life denying her important contributions to the early successes of the Third Reich.
Speaking of Catholic nuns convicted of playing important parts in the 1996 genocide in Rwanda, Pope John Paul II said: about. . . "members that have acted against the evangelic law; they will be called to render account of their own actions. All Church members that have sinned during the genocide must have the courage to assume the consequences of their deeds they have done against God and fellow men."

In George Orwell's 1984, it was stated, "Who controls the past controls the future, who controls the present controls the past." Who is going to control the present-fundamentalism or freedom?
History is being distorted by many preachers and politicians. They are heard on the airwaves condemning atheists and routinely claim Adolf Hitler was one. Hitler was a Roman Catholic, baptized into that religio-political institution as an infant in Austria. He became a communicant and an altar boy in his youth and was confirmed as a "soldier of Christ" in that church. 
Its worst doctrines never left him. He was steeped in its liturgy, which contained the words "perfidious jew." This hateful statement was not removed until 1961. "Perfidy" means treachery. In his day, hatred of Jews was the norm. In great measure it was sponsored by two major religions of Germany, Catholicism and Lutheranism.He greatly admired Martin Luther, who openly hated the Jews. Luther condemned the Catholic Church for its pretensions and corruption, but he supported the centuries of papal pogroms against the Jews. Luther said, "The Jews deserve to be hanged on gallows, seven times higher than ordinary thieves," and "We ought to take revenge on the Jews and kill them." "Ungodly wretches" he called the Jews in his book Table Talk. Hitler seeking power, wrote in Mein Kampf, ". . . I am convinced that I am acting as the agent of our Creator. By fighting off the Jews. I am doing the Lord's work." Years later, when in power, he quoted those same words in a Reichstag speech in 1938. Three years later he informed General Gerhart Engel: "I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so." He never left the church, and the church never left him. Great literature was banned by his church, but his miserable Mein Kampf never appeared on the index of Forbidden Books. He was not excommunicated or even condemned by his church. Popes, in fact, contracted with Hitler and his fascist friends Franco and Mussolini, giving them veto power over whom the pope could appoint as a bishop in Germany, Spain, and Italy. The three thugs agreed to surtax the Catholics of these countries and send the money to Rome in exchange for making sure the state could control the church. Those who would make Hitler an atheist should turn their eyes to history books before they address their pews and microphones. Acclaimed Hitler biographer John Toland explains his heartlessness as follows: "Still a member in good standing of the Church of Rome despite the detestation of its hierarchy, he carried within him its teaching that the Jews was the killer of god. The extermination, therefore, could be done without a twinge of conscience since he was merely acting as the avenging hand of god . . . " Hitler's Germany amalgamated state with church. Soldiers of the vermacht wore belt buckles inscribed with the following: "Gott mit uns" (God is with us). His troops were often sprinkled with holy water by the priests. It was a real Christian country whose citizens were indoctrinated by both state and church and blindly followed all authority figures, political and ecclesiastical. Hitler, like some of the today's politicians and preachers, politicized "family values." He liked corporeal punishment in home and school. Jesus prayers became mandatory in all schools under his administration. While abortion was illegal in pre-Hitler Germany, he took it to new depths of enforcement, requiring all doctors to report to the government the circumstances of all miscarriages. He openly despised homosexuality and criminalized it. And here is a translation of part of a speech that Adolf Hitler gave in April, 1922. It was then published in "My New Order" : In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was his fight against the Jewish poison. Today, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed his blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice. . . And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly, it is the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people. And when I look on my people I see them work and work and toil and labor, and at the end of the week they have only for their wages wretchedness and misery. When I go out in the morning and see these men standing in their queues and look into their pinched faces, then I believe I would be no Christian, but a very devil, if I felt no pity for them, if I did not, as did our Lord two thousand years ago, turn against those by whom today this poor people are plundered and exploited." Reflections of an Aryan German who lived through the insanity: "Once the war began," my colleague continued, "resistance, protest, criticism, complaint, all carried with them a multiplied likelihood of the greatest punishment. Mere lack of enthusiasm, or failure to show it in public, was "defeatism." You assumed that there were lists of those who would be "dealt with" later, after the victory. Goebbels was very clever here, too. He continually promised a "victory orgy" to "take care of" those who thought that their "treasonable attitude" had escaped notice. And he meant it; that was not just propaganda. And that was enough to put an end to all uncertainty. "Once the war began, the government could do anything "necessary" to win it; so it was with the "final solution" of the Jewish problem, which the NAZIs always talked about but never dared undertake, not even the NAZIs, until war and its "necessities" gave them the knowledge that they could get away with it. The people abroad who thought that war against Hitler would help the Jews were wrong. And the people in Germany who, once the war had begun, still thought of complaining, protesting, resisting, were betting on Germany's losing the war. It was a long bet. Not many made it." A historical note for which we had to find a place: In a legal case in which a holocaust denyer claimed that there could not have been enough coal to burn all of the bodies of the Jews believed to have been murdered there, it was revealed that the NAZIs had discovered that the body fat of the victims themselves could provide much of the fuel necessary to keep the ovens burning at just the right temperatures. A German veteran of World War I, Sebastian Haffner, wrote in his book, Defying Hitler: "As Bismarck once remarked in a famous speech, moral courage is, in any case, a rare virtue in Germany, but it deserts a German completely the moment he puts on a uniform. As soldier and officer, he is indisputably and outstandingly courageous on the field of battle. He is usually even prepared to open fire on his own compatriots if ordered to do so. Yet he is as timid as a lamb at the thought of opposing authority. The suggestion of such a confrontation always conjures up the nightmare of a firing squad and he is immediately paralyzed. It is not death he fears, but this particular death, which scares him out of his wits. That makes any idea of insubordination or a coup d'état altogether impossible for the German military-whoever happens to be in power." ( - chapter 8, p 39-40 )
A few days after the signing of the Lateran Treaty (between the Pope & Mussolini, the precursor of the Reich Concordat between Hitler and Pope) , Hitler wrote an article for the Volkisher Beobachter, published on 2/22/1929, warmly welcoming the agreement. The conclusion of his rant contained a gross distrortion as well as a remarkable intuition of future opportunities: "The fact that the Catholic Church has come to an agreement with Fascist Italy. . . proves beyond doubt that the Fascist world of ideas is closer to Christianity (i.e. Catholicism) than (to) those of Jewish liberalism or even atheistic Marxism, to which the so-called Catholic Center Party sees itself so closely bound, to the detriment of Christianity today and our German people."
