I heard a Mariologist claim on the Catholic EWT network that next to Jesus the person most mentioned was Jesus' mother, Mary. This is a great example of the shoddy kind of authoritative statement that passes for "scholarship" in the Catholic world.
        That didn't seem right to me; so I did the following quick search (with Quickverse).
        Between the 21 references to her by her function ( i.e. the "mother" of Jesus - without her name), and the roughly 23 references to her by her name (listed below), Jesus' mother Mary is mentioned about 44 times in various combinations in the four Gospels. ( The total number of references to Mary by name in the Gospels of Mark and John appears to be 0 ! ).

1. (Mat 1:16 TLB) "Jacob was the father of Joseph (who was the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ the Messiah)."
2. (Mat 1:18) "These are the facts concerning the birth of Jesus Christ: His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But while she was still a virgin she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit."
3. (Mat 1:20) "As he lay awake considering this, he fell into a dream, and saw an angel standing beside him. "Joseph, son of David," the angel said, "don't hesitate to take Mary as your wife! For the child within her has been conceived by the Holy Spirit."
4. (Mat 1:24) "When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel commanded and brought Mary home to be his wife,"
5. (Mat 2:11) "Entering the house where the baby and Mary, his mother, were, they threw themselves down before him, worshiping. Then they opened their presents and gave him gold, frankincense, and myrrh."
6. (Mat 2:14) "That same night he left for Egypt with Mary and the baby,"
7. (Mat 13:55) "How is this possible?" the people exclaimed. "He's just a carpenter's son, and we know Mary his mother and his brothers--James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas."

This history may explain why the Catholic Mariology book, T he Virgin Mary, makes this remarkable admission : "According to the faith and discipline of the Church, devotions to Mary is not necessary for the winning of God's love; otherwise, the first six centuries would stand condemned. The creeds hardly speak at all of the Virgin. The liturgy of the sacraments does not mention her. The prayers of the Mass rarely name her" (The Virgin Mary, Guitton, 178-179).

There are about 84 references to John the Baptist in the Gospel :
